A weekend leaves enough room
A gallery weekend works best when it isn’t treated like a list. Two or three exhibitions in a day can be plenty, especially when there is time to walk between them, stop for something to eat, or let one show settle before entering the next.
Smaller galleries are often good at changing the pace. You might spend twenty minutes in one and an hour in another. Some are built around a single artist, others around a programme that changes the way you understand a neighbourhood. The point is not the size of the room, but whether somebody has made a clear decision about what belongs there and why.
The spaces around the exhibitions matter too. A converted factory in Valencia, a townhouse in Paris, an artist-run room in Tokyo. Moving between them becomes part of the experience: different streets, different buildings, different ways a city makes room for art.
These eight places are not meant to fill an entire weekend. They are somewhere to begin — a few exhibitions worth making time for, with enough left between them for the city itself.
