The Acropolis Museum opened in 2009 in a building by Bernard Tschumi directly below the Parthenon — close enough that the relationship between object and origin is visible from the top floor. The friezes gallery on the third floor is the building's central argument: the surviving Parthenon sculptures are arranged in their original sequence, with the gaps where the Elgin Marbles are absent deliberately left as negative space. The effect is quiet and pointed. The ground floor is built on glass panels over an active archaeological excavation — you walk above it. The best time to visit is just after opening, when the natural light through the top-floor windows arrives at its most architectural angle.
