Andén 0 — Platform Zero — is the original 1919 platform of Madrid's first metro line, preserved intact beneath the Sol interchange station. The tunnel is tiled in the style of Madrid's early twentieth century municipal work: cream-coloured, arched, with period advertising panels and the original station typography. The Metro Museum occupies the full length of the platform, which was sealed from regular service when the interchange was expanded and the original alignment superseded. Access is through Sol station; the descent takes you below the existing station level into a period that has been maintained with unusual care. The collection includes rolling stock, engineering documents, and the photographic archive of the network's construction — which dates from when Madrid was one of the few Continental cities building a metro system. The museum receives a fraction of the foot traffic that passes through Sol above it, which is the correct proportion for a room of this quality.
