Antica Bottega del Vino is on Via Scudo di Francia, a short walk from the Piazza delle Erbe, and has been a serious wine address in Verona since 1890. The interior has the resolved character of a room that has not needed reinvention: dark wood, the original bottles displayed in the window, a long bar counter of polished stone, the wine list a substantial document rather than a laminated card. The list runs to several hundred labels with particular depth in the DOC wines of the Valpolicella — Amarone, Ripasso, Recioto — and in the great producers of northern Italy and France. The osteria kitchen produces the Veronese accompaniment: cured meats, formaggi, a few cooked dishes in the evening. The Bottega is the correct address for understanding why the Veneto is one of the most serious wine regions in Italy.
