Blackbird Coffee Club occupies a ground-floor room in a Bruges townhouse that has been arranged with the particular ambition of a place that wants its guests to stay: fabric draped across the ceiling to soften the acoustics, a large crystal cage chandelier on a long drop, a working fireplace with a mantel that has accumulated objects over time, an eclectic selection of chairs and sofas around low tables, plants occupying most of the available vertical surfaces. The coffee is specialty-sourced and taken seriously; the brunch menu is elaborate enough to justify the visit without the coffee. The room at mid-morning, before the lunch service, is at its best — warm, slightly theatrical, and quiet enough for a long conversation. The fireplace in winter gives the room a quality of enclosure that the canal views outside amplify rather than compete with.
