Blackwell's on South Bridge is one of the few large-format bookshops that has not resolved its scale by becoming a lifestyle store. The interior — long corridors of shelving, recessed lighting, the quiet industry of people actually looking for specific books — is serious in the way that a university town's bookshop should be. The academic and humanities sections are strong; the Scottish literature selection is the most comprehensive in the city. The building's proportions are the correct proportions for a bookshop: high enough that the shelves do not feel compressed, deep enough that the rear of the shop is always quieter than the front.
