Tadao Ando's intervention inside the 19th-century Bourse du Commerce is one of the most considered acts of museum architecture in recent European history: a concrete cylinder inserted within the existing circular rotunda, holding the curved balcony and the original fresco ceiling — painted in 1889 by Luc-Olivier Merson — in productive tension with the new. The Pinault Collection itself is among the strongest private contemporary art holdings in the world. The building earns a visit independently of whatever is showing.
