Café Fleury on Weinbergsweg is the French café that Prenzlauer Berg needed and that Prenzlauer Berg would otherwise have invented badly. The croissants are made in-house and arrive correctly: layered, buttery, not oversized. The coffee is correct. The interior is small — eight or ten tables, a counter, a zinc bar detail — and the morning light from the west-facing window is the best available argument for arriving before nine. The neighbourhood around it (Weinbergsweg descends toward Mitte at the bottom; the Volkspark Weinberg is at the top) gives the walk to and from the café a quality that the café extends without announcing.
