Café Knuth, Hamburg — SÉRIF

Café Knuth is in Ottensen — an Altona neighbourhood that has been a commercial street since the eighteenth century — in a ground-floor space that retains the cast-iron column, the height, and the fenestration of its Altbau building. The bar runs along one wall; the café tables occupy the rest; the large windows look onto a tree-lined street. It is a room that has not been redesigned to accommodate current café aesthetics: the leather-cushioned bar stools are worn, the column remains unpainted, the pendant light is original or near-original. The coffee is the Hamburg standard — correct and without ceremony. Knuth opens early and closes when it should, and the morning hour, when the street outside is still quiet, is the time to understand why the room has lasted.
