Café Nin occupies a terrace-fronted corner building in the Condesa — the neighbourhood of art deco apartment buildings and jacaranda trees that has housed Mexico City's creative class since the 1990s. The terrace tables face the street at the hour when the jacarandas are at their most particular, which is to say early morning in late March, when the purple overhead and the light underneath reach an unlikely agreement. The interior continues the logic of its architecture: high ceilings, plaster walls, the kind of space that was built to last and has done so without requiring much intervention. The coffee is Oaxacan. The food is Mexican in the correct manner — tortillas made from masa, not flour.
