The outdoor café terrace on the waterfront promenade, within sight of the White Tower — the symbol of Thessaloniki that was built by the Ottomans, used as a prison, and is now the city's most photographed object. The terrace operates on the promenade's logic: red folding chairs and green bistro tables under the plane trees, coffee served in the Greek style, and a view of the tower that is framed by the foliage rather than exposed full-frontal. The White Tower glows at dusk — golden at one angle, orange at another — and the terrace fills in the evening with the city's serious socialising. Thessaloniki's breakfast and coffee culture is among the most committed in the Mediterranean; this terrace is one of the more atmospheric places in which to participate in it.
