Café Tomaselli, established in 1703 on the Alter Markt, is the oldest café in Salzburg and one of the oldest in Austria. The current main room — leather banquettes, marble-topped tables, cane chairs, and framed engravings of alpine landscapes on wooden-panelled walls — is an interior that has arrived at its own completeness without help from recent renovation. The menu is uncompromised: Viennese coffees, homemade Mehlspeisen, a pastry counter with Salzburger Nockerl and Mozartkugeln variations. The waiters know the regulars without appearing to notice them. Mozart's family were among the café's earliest clientele. There is nothing about the room that would surprise them on return.
