Casa Hibiscus, Cuenca — SÉRIF

A converted colonial house on a cobblestone street in Cuenca's historic centre. The building reads its age correctly — terracotta floors, dark wooden balconies, walls in a faded dusty blue that has the quality of having been arrived at rather than chosen. The interior courtyard is the architecture: two-storey, open to the sky, planted with palms and a hammock at one end. The café off the entrance hall serves coffee, wine, and little else. From the upper terrace, the domes of the New Cathedral appear above the tile rooflines at dusk, when the light in Cuenca changes completely.
