The house Barragán built for himself in Tacubaya in 1947 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the reason is apparent the moment you enter: the use of colour — volcanic pink, gold, matte white — and the diagonal management of natural light create a spatial experience that is completely specific to Mexico City. The rooms are small, the ceiling heights vary dramatically, and every surface has been considered in relation to every other. The house is entered only by guided tour; the tour is the correct speed. The rooftop terrace, where Barragán kept horses within earshot of the city below, is the most important open space in Mexican modern architecture.
