Casa Noha is a medieval building in the Sasso Barisano managed by the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) that tells the story of the Sassi evacuations through a 25-minute audio-visual presentation projected directly onto the walls and floor of the cave rooms. The technique — images from the Sassi's inhabited past and the 1950s forced clearances projected onto the stone and worn plaster surfaces at large scale — is one of the more considered uses of projection technology in a museum context. The building itself is part of the argument: the worn brick floors, the exposed tuff walls, the shifting light from a high skylight. Casa Noha is the best orientation point for understanding Matera before exploring the Sassi on foot.
