Cogito Coffee, Dubrovnik — SÉRIF

Cogito Coffee occupies a vaulted stone passage in the old city — a medieval arch of pale limestone with benches set along the outer wall and a small counter visible through the low window. The setting is extraordinary: the stonework is the same material and craft as the city walls above, and the proportions of the arch give the space a quality of enclosure that the city's more open cafés cannot replicate. The coffee is specialty-roasted and taken seriously. The name — Latin for I think — implies the correct pace. On a warm morning, the passage is shaded when the streets beyond it are already bright; on a grey day, the arch amplifies the existing quality of the light. A place to arrive at slowly and leave later than intended.
