Drawn & Quarterly is both an independent press — founded in 1990, publishing graphic novels, literary comics, and translated art comics from France, Japan, and beyond — and a bookshop in the Mile End that functions as its public face. The shop is on Rue Bernard, a block from Fairmount Bagel, in a ground-floor commercial space with the proportions and light of a place that chose the neighbourhood because the neighbourhood suited it. The selection extends beyond the press's own catalogue to literary fiction, books on architecture, feminist publishing, and the local Québécois literary scene. The press's translation programme — bringing European and Japanese comics into English — is one of the most important in North American publishing.
