Fernandez & Wells began as a wine and charcuterie bar and is now one of the few independent café operations in London that has maintained both its original sensibility and its original quality over a decade of Soho changing around it. The Beak Street location is the original — a long narrow room with a small counter, Italian pastries, and a coffee programme that has aged well because it was calibrated correctly at the beginning. The cheese and ham boards at lunchtime are the correct order; the morning shift is quieter than the afternoon. Soho is full of places that perform independence; this one is actually independent.
