The Grand Hotel San Marino sits at the edge of the historic centre at 739 metres above the Adriatic plain — the view from the upper-floor rooms across the Romagna countryside to the coastline is the hotel's primary argument. The building is mid-century in form and unhurried in character: a lobby with the particular stillness of a hotel where the day visitors have already departed, corridors with the quietness of an altitude that is not quite mountain but above the ordinary air of the plain. The hotel is at its best between five and eight in the evening, when the last coaches have descended the mountain road and the republic belongs to its own residents. The terrace view at sunset over the Apennine ridge toward Rimini and the Adriatic is not replicated anywhere in the region.
