In the Lastarria neighbourhood — the cultural quarter immediately east of the Cerro Santa Lucía park — Hotel Lastarria occupies a building with the particular qualities of Santiago's best early-twentieth-century residential architecture: tall French windows with dark wooden frames and shutters, hardwood floors worn to a particular amber by use, rooms furnished with a rattan bergère chair and a Persian rug rather than the airport-hotel palette. The bedroom light at dusk is warm and specific — the windows face west toward the park and the last light comes through at an angle that changes the room entirely. The neighbourhood makes the hotel: independent bookshops, the Museo de Arte Visual, and cafés where the architecture is a reason to visit. Nothing is performed for the guest; the standard is that of a good house.
