Kyoto Tsutaya Books, Kyoto — SÉRIF

The Kyoto Tsutaya Books occupies a purpose-built five-storey building in Okazaki, a few minutes from the Heian Shrine and the city's principal museums. The central feature is a wall of backlit bookshelves rising the full height of the interior — dense, warm, arranged by theme rather than by alphabet. The collection focuses on art, architecture, design, craft, and Japanese literature in a way that reflects the neighbourhood rather than the commercial logic of a chain bookshop. The ground floor moves between books, design objects, and a coffee counter; the upper levels become progressively quieter. Worth visiting in the morning, before the cultural district fills.
