Marchesi has been operating on Via Santa Maria alla Porta since 1824, which means it was here before the Galleria was built, before the Duomo was finished, before the city became what it now is. The room is small, the pastries are made on the premises, and the espresso is prepared by people who have been doing it for a long time. The Brera location — which came later — is the one to visit: on a street that rewards slow walking, with a room that rewards staying.
