Matejuška is the small fishing cove immediately west of Diocletian's Palace walls — a narrow inlet where the working fishermen's boats have moored since the medieval period and where the bars and konobas on the quay operate on a simpler logic than the tourist-facing Riva. The water is close enough to touch from the terrace tables; the boats are real boats, not decorations. The wine is local — Pošip and Grk from the nearby islands, Plavac Mali from the Dalmatian mainland — served at prices that reflect a neighbourhood establishment rather than a harbour-view premium. At evening the light on the harbour entrance is long and orange, and the fishermen returning with the late catch are the event. Arrive at the transitional hour between afternoon and evening, when the working day is ending and the tourist economy has not yet fully colonised the hour.
