Knjižara Morpurgo has been operating since 1860 — the oldest continuously running bookshop in Croatia, set in an arched stone passage immediately adjacent to the Peristyle of Diocletian's Palace. The facade is Art Nouveau: dark green arched woodwork with 'KNJIZARA MORPURGO' lettered in gold above the entrance, set into the ancient Roman stonework of the palace quarter. The stock is in Croatian, with a section of foreign-language titles in English, Italian, and German; the travel and regional history section is the strongest in the city. The Morpurgo family opened the shop in the 19th century when Split was under Habsburg administration; the building has been a bookshop ever since. There is something entirely correct about a bookshop that has traded inside a 4th-century Roman palace for one hundred and sixty years. The address is the argument.
