The Mozarteum complex on the Schwarzstrasse houses both the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg — one of Europe's leading music conservatories — and the Großes Festspielhaus concert hall that bears the same name. The 1914 building by Richard Berndl is in the monumental historicist style that Central European cities commissioned for cultural institutions in the decade before the First World War: a large neo-Baroque facade with a statuary programme referencing Mozart, a glass-and-iron modern extension to the rear. Inside the complex is the Mozart Wohnhaus (the house where Mozart lived from 1773) and the Mozarteum Foundation archive, which holds the largest scholarly collection of Mozart manuscripts and correspondence in the world. The concert programme is the most frequent reason to visit — the Mozarteum Orchestra and the chamber series in the Wiener Saal are among the best in Austria.
