The Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal occupies five interconnected buildings on Sherbrooke Street — the oldest, the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion, opened in 1912; the most recent, the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion, in 2011. The collection spans 40,000 objects from antiquity to the present, with particular depth in Canadian art, Quebec decorative arts, and an international modern and contemporary collection. The Bourgie Pavilion's performance hall — a glass-roofed auditorium inside a converted Erskine and American United Church from 1894 — is one of the stranger and more successful architectural solutions in the Canadian museum world. The permanent collection has the institutional coherence that only accumulation over a century produces.
