The Museo Nacional de Antropología occupies a building designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez in 1964 within Chapultepec Park — 22 permanent rooms arranged around a central courtyard dominated by El Paraguas: a single carved column supporting a wide concrete canopy from which water descends continuously in a curtain around the pool below. The museum holds the principal collection of pre-Hispanic material culture in Mexico, across civilisations from Teotihuacán to the Maya to the Mexica. The Aztec sun stone is in the Mexica room on the ground floor; the jade funerary mask from Palenque is in the Maya rooms above. Moving slowly through a single room produces more than a complete circuit at speed. Allow considerably more time than you expect to use. Confirm hours and entry conditions before visiting.
