The Museum der Moderne (MdM) operates across two sites — the Mönchsberg building, a marble-and-glass cube completed in 2004 by Hufnagel Püschel Architekten at the cliff's edge above the Altstadt, and the Rupertinum in the Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse. The Mönchsberg building is the more architecturally significant: a white marble box accessed by a lift cut through the cliff face, with the panorama of the Old Town rooftops available from the building's terrace. The permanent and temporary collections focus on international contemporary art and photography from the 20th century onward — print, photography, painting, and sculpture arranged in white gallery volumes where the quality of natural light entering from the rock-face windows makes the experience of the work different from comparable rooms at sea level.
