Modern One — the primary modern art gallery of National Galleries Scotland — occupies a neoclassical building on Belford Road that has been a gallery since 1960. The façade faces a sculpture garden that includes works by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth arranged on the lawn in front of the portico: the combination of the Greek Revival stonework, the mature trees, and the outdoor sculpture establishes the register before you enter. The collection covers Scottish and international modern art from the late nineteenth century through the twentieth; the holdings of Scottish Colourists and the Edinburgh School are particularly strong. The approach from the Water of Leith walkway adds twenty minutes and arrives at the garden from the back, which is the correct direction.
