The National Gallery of Victoria is Australia's oldest and most visited art museum — the NGV International, in its current building on St. Kilda Road designed by Roy Grounds (1968), holds the international collection: Rembrandt, Tiepolo, Degas, and an extensive decorative arts collection from Asia and Europe. The building has the civic monumentality of its period and the water wall at the entrance — a continuous sheet of water falling across the facade — remains one of the stranger and more compelling gestures in Australian architecture. The NGV Australia, a short walk away at Federation Square, holds the Australian collection from the colonial era to the present. The international collection at St. Kilda Road is the stronger and generally less crowded option.
