The Neue Pinakothek on Barer Straße occupies a building that replaced Leo von Klenze's original 1853 museum, destroyed in the Second World War. The current structure, designed by Alexander von Branca and opened in 1981, is a neo-historicist building of deliberate ambition: the columns, arched windows, and granite exterior engage the Pinakotheken quarter's nineteenth-century character rather than reacting against it. The collection covers European painting from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries — Romanticism, Impressionism, Symbolism, and the Munich School are particularly well represented. The sequence of rooms follows the historical periods without pressing the visitor to move quickly. The bronze sculpture on the forecourt arrives before the door.
