Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen — SÉRIF

Carl Jacobsen's 1897 gift to Copenhagen — a building constructed specifically to house his collection of ancient sculpture and 19th-century Danish and French art. The architectural sequence is extraordinary: the classical galleries with their marble Ionic columns and red walls lead to a winter garden under a glass dome, with a café and tropical plants at the centre. The ancient sculpture collection — Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman — is one of the best in Northern Europe, and the galleries are rarely crowded by the standards of the building's quality. Tuesday is free. Arrive before noon.
