Plants Grow Urban occupies the ground floor of a sandstone corner building at Grove Street — the building's carved stone arch above the entrance has Gothic floral capitals that have survived since the Victorian period, and the contrast between the carved foliage in stone and the living plants in the window is not accidental. The café operates on a sit-in and takeaway basis; the plant-shop element is the primary retail function, the coffee is the daily-use programme. At dusk the warm window light reads from the pavement with the particular quality of a room that knows what it is. The Tollcross location — south of the Meadows, outside the principal tourist geography — means the clientele is largely local.
