The Proper Hotel occupies the 1909 T&D Building on Market Street — a seven-storey Beaux-Arts building that survived the 1906 earthquake by being built after it. Kelly Wearstler's interior design is the hotel's architectural argument: layered pattern, dark lacquered wood, vintage textiles, and a colour palette that makes each floor feel distinct while remaining coherent across the building. The lobby lounge operates as a Moroccan-inflected drawing room — zellige tile, arched niches, leather banquettes — that is as much a neighbourhood bar as a hotel amenity. The location is the pivot point between Hayes Valley, the Civic Center, and the Castro; the immediate surroundings are the mixed-use reality of mid-Market, which requires some tolerance but rewards it with proximity to some of San Francisco's most interesting independent food and retail. The hotel is the correct base for a San Francisco visit that does not want to be contained within the tourist perimeter.
