Munich's Rosengarten is one of the quieter green spaces in a city that is well supplied with parks and gardens. The garden follows a traditional format — formal in its planting, with paths organised around the central beds — but the older specimens, particularly the large gnarled trees that shade the benches at the garden's edges, give the space a quality that is less formal than the underlying design suggests. In early summer it operates as a catalogue for rose species largely bred out of commercial floriculture; in late summer and autumn the greenery takes over and the garden becomes a shade garden rather than a flower garden. The benches face east or west depending on position; the east-facing ones are correct for morning. The garden receives few visitors outside the rose season, which makes it one of Munich's more reliably quiet outdoor rooms.
