The outdoor antiquarian book market on Slaveykov Square is one of the more honest cultural institutions in the Balkans — a daily open-air market of used and antique books, operating without sentimentality or curation, priced for a local readership rather than a tourist one. The stalls display Cyrillic paperbacks, Soviet-era encyclopedias, Bulgarian poetry, bilingual dictionaries, and the occasional foreign-language title in grid-clip format on wire frames. The signs — handwritten on cardboard — announce prices in leva and sometimes the willingness to buy ('ИЗКУПУВА СТАРИ КНИГИ'). The market has been here since the socialist period and has not updated its visual identity since then, which is not a criticism. Named after the poet Petko Rachev Slaveykov, whose bronze statue sits at the centre.
