Hotel Ter Brughe occupies a 13th-century merchant's house on the Jan Van Eyckplein canal — one of the oldest surviving domestic buildings in Bruges, in one of the city's most quietly distinguished squares. The hotel has nineteen rooms; the scale is appropriate. The public rooms occupy the original ground-floor spaces: the lounge has wide-planked oak floors worn to a patina, timber beams at low height, checked armchairs around a central table, and the kind of accumulated domestic atmosphere that cannot be designed. The dining room is in a stone-vaulted cellar — a medieval arch overhead, a large window set into the wall with brick reveals, the original proportions of a room that has always been used for eating. Ter Brughe is a hotel that takes its building seriously and does not attempt to update it beyond good maintenance. The canal-facing rooms in the morning have the specific quality of early Bruges light on water.
