The Veletržní palác is a 1928 Functionalist building in Holešovice — one of the finest examples of interwar Czech modernism, designed by Oldřich Tyl and Josef Fuchs. It is the main building of the National Gallery and permanently houses the Slovanská epopej — the Slav Epic — Alfons Mucha's cycle of twenty monumental paintings depicting Slavic mythological and historical scenes. Each canvas is enormous: the largest is six metres tall. To stand in the room with them is to understand the difference between art at human scale and art at the scale of myth. Allow more time than you think you need.
